Barcodes on Avery 5160 labels

Choose the 30-per-sheet stock, print at 100% scale (not “fit to page”), and the barcodes land inside each 2⅝ × 1 in label. Half-used sheet? Click the first empty spot and printing starts there.

The same layout is used by Avery 8160 and many store-brand 30-per-sheet address labels. BetaWave Inventory also has presets for 10 per sheet (5163 size, 4 × 2 in) and 80 per sheet (5167 size, 1¾ × ½ in).

Printer settings that keep labels lined up

  1. In the print dialog, set scale to 100% or Actual size. "Fit to page" shrinks everything and the labels drift off.
  2. Set margins to None or Default; the page already accounts for the sheet's margins.
  3. Use paper size Letter.
  4. For your first run, tick Print label outlines in the label maker and print on plain paper. Hold it against a label sheet to the light to check alignment before you use real labels.

How much fits on a 1-inch label

A 2⅝ in wide label has room for an item name and a Code 128 barcode of up to about 20 characters while keeping bars wide enough for ordinary scanners to read. A UPC-A always fits. If a code is too long for the label, the label maker tells you instead of printing bars too thin to scan.

Reusing a half-used sheet

The sheet map in the label maker names every spot like a bin location: A1, A2, A3 across the top row, B1 below. Click the first empty spot and printing starts there, so the used labels are skipped.
